5 Stepping Stones to Resilience: Breath, Balance & Calm

Discover 5 simple pathways to resilience from grounding and flow to fire, heart and voice. Small breath rituals that build strength and calm daily.

Have you ever noticed how resilience isn’t built in one big leap but in small, steady steps?

A breath that calms your racing thoughts.
A sip of something nourishing when your energy dips.
A pause that helps you find the right words instead of reacting.

These are the stepping stones that carry us across the rushing rivers of life. Miss one and you may wobble. Step with awareness and suddenly you feel supported, steady and able to keep moving forward.

That’s the heart of my Inner Strength in Action series, 5 posts that explore simple, science-backed practices for building courage and calm. Each one is a stepping stone: not the whole journey on its own but a vital part of the path.

Let’s walk it together.

Stepping Stone 1: Root - Finding Your Ground

Have you ever had one of those days where your brain is buzzing, your body is restless and you’re one coffee spill away from snapping? That’s what being ungrounded feels like: your nervous system stuck in alert mode, whispering “I don’t feel safe.”

The Root stepping stone is about anchoring yourself when life feels shaky. It’s about finding a sense of safety in your body so that your mind can slow down.

Grounding practices can be surprisingly simple: pausing to notice your feet on the floor, stepping outside to feel the earth under your shoes or taking a slow, steady breath. Even food can help, root vegetables like beetroot literally come from the ground, reminding your body on a primal level that you’re supported.

The science adds another layer: beets are rich in nitrates, which your body converts into nitric oxide. That means better circulation, more oxygen delivery and more energy for both body and brain. Pair that with slow, intentional breathing, which also boosts nitric oxide naturally, and you’ve got a power couple for stability and resilience.

Curious how to bring this Root energy into your daily rituals (including a delicious beet-inspired recipe)?

Stepping Stone 2: Sacral - Restoring Flow

If the Root is about stability, the Sacral is about flow. It’s that sense of being in rhythm with life rather than fighting against it. You know the feeling: when everything is aligned, energy flows effortlessly. When it’s blocked, you feel tired, irritable or stuck.

One of the most overlooked ways our bodies experience “flow” is through hydration. We often hear that drinking enough water is the key but here’s the truth: water alone can’t do its job without electrolytes. Minerals like sodium, potassium and magnesium act like tiny sparks that keep the body’s inner currents flowing.

Think of electrolytes as the unsung heroes that help your muscles contract, your nerves fire and your energy stay steady. Without them you can sip water all day and still feel crampy, foggy or fatigued.

The Sacral stepping stone invites you to restore balance with small rituals: a homemade electrolyte drink after movement, a mineral-rich meal or even mindful water breaks during the day. And because this energy centre is linked with emotion, hydration becomes more than a physical act. It’s a way of saying: “I’m ready to feel it all.”

Stepping Stone 3: Solar Plexus - Reigniting Your Fire

Have you ever felt like your spark is gone? One day you’re powering through tasks like a machine, fuelled by coffee and adrenaline. The next, you crash into exhaustion or get stuck staring at the to-do list without moving a finger.

The Solar Plexus stepping stone is about balance. It’s your inner fire... the energy that fuels action, confidence and personal power. But like any fire, it can burn too bright (leading to burnout, perfectionism, inflammation, exhaustion) or fade too low (procrastination, self-doubt, paralysis).

Finding balance means feeding the fire steadily, not recklessly. This is where rituals make a difference. Something as simple as a warming, golden turmeric drink can help you feel nourished and resilient instead of depleted. Science shows turmeric’s active compound, curcumin, reduces inflammation and supports steady energy especially when combined with black pepper and healthy fats for absorption.

The Solar stepping stone also reminds us that fire isn’t just physical energy... it’s courage. Each small act of self-care, each pause to breathe instead of pushing harder, is a way of reclaiming your spark.

Stepping Stone 4: Heart - Breathing into Coherence

When was the last time you truly felt your heart? Not just as a beat in your chest but as a rhythm shaping your whole experience?

The Heart stepping stone is about connection: with yourself, with others and with the present moment. Out of balance, it feels heavy as resentment, overwhelm or emotional shutdown. In balance, it feels light, expansive and open to giving and receiving love.

Science shows that our hearts are more than pumps. They’re rhythm-setters, constantly talking to the brain. When you breathe at around 5–6 breaths per minute, what researchers call the resonance rate, your heart, breath and nervous system fall into coherence. This synchrony boosts heart rate variability (HRV), a key marker of resilience.

Practising coherence breathing has been shown to reduce stress and improve sleep and you don’t need to be a monk to feel the benefits, just a few minutes a day can make a measurable difference.

Pair this with green, heart-nourishing foods and you’ve got a ritual that feeds both body and soul.

Stepping Stone 5: Throat - Speaking Your Truth

Have you ever stayed silent when you knew you should speak or swallowed your words only to feel a lump in your throat later? The Throat stepping stone is about sound, clarity and the freedom to express yourself.

Your voice literally rides on your breath. No breath, no voice. That’s why practices like chanting, humming or prayer have been used for centuries to connect breath and expression. Modern research shows humming can increase nitric oxide in the sinuses by up to 15x compared to quiet exhalation improving oxygen uptake, circulation and even immune defence.

Vibrations from humming or chanting also stimulate the vagus nerve, sending calming signals to the brain and body. In other words, sound isn’t just expression, it’s medicine.

The Throat stepping stone invites you to find your true voice in small ways: humming to yourself when you feel tense, pausing to breathe before a conversation or enjoying a throat-soothing ritual like frozen spirulina yoghurt cups with blueberries and chia.
